What is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is a patient-centered program for individuals facing a life-limiting illness, focusing on comfort rather than curative treatment. Services are provided in the comfort of the patient’s home, allowing families to be present and involved in care.

Who is Eligible?

Hospice care is available to any person at any age who has a life-limiting illness and a life expectancy of six months or less. Patients are no longer seeking curative treatments. Eligibility is established by your physician.

How Do You Qualify for Hospice Care?

If you have Medicare Part A and meet these conditions, your hospice care is fully covered:

Your hospice doctor and your regular doctor certify that you are terminally ill (life expectancy of 6 months or less)
You accept palliative care (for comfort) instead of care to cure your illness
You sign a statement choosing hospice care instead of other Medicare-covered benefits to treat your terminal illness and related conditions

What Does Hospice Care Include?

Depending on your illness and related conditions, the plan of care your hospice team creates may include any or all of these services:

Doctor and nursing care
Medical equipment and supplies
Prescription drugs
Hospice aide and homemaker services
Therapy services (physical, occupational, speech)
Social work services
Dietary counseling
Grief and loss counseling for you and your family
Short-term inpatient care for pain and symptom management
Short-term respite care (up to 5 days if your usual caregiver needs a rest)

Mission HHH arranges respite care at a Medicare-approved facility such as a hospital, nursing home, or hospice care facility.

How Long Can You Get Hospice Care?

Hospice care is for people with a life expectancy of 6 months or less. If you live longer than 6 months, you can still receive hospice care as long as the hospice medical director re-certifies you. A hospice nurse and doctor are on-call 24/7 to provide support and care when needed.
